Being a light in this dark world

By Deaconess Donna Carrington · 2 min read

Have you ever been in a room when the lights suddenly went out? Everything becomes dark, and even a tiny flashlight can make a big difference.

The Bible teaches us that we can be like that light in the world around us. Jesus said in Matthew 5:14, “Ye are the light of the world.” Being a light doesn’t mean we have to be perfect or famous. It means living in a way that shows God’s love to others.

What does it mean to be a light?

Being a light means having a relationship with God first, so our lives will shine like lights. We shine when we are kind to one another: you can help a classmate, include someone in a game, or simply say something nice or encouraging to someone. A small act of kindness can make someone’s day a brighter one.

We can also speak words that build up others, because words can hurt, but they can also heal, encourage and give hope. The Bible tells us in 1 Thessalonians 5:11, “Wherefore comfort yourselves together, and edify one another.” So before you speak, ask yourself, “Will my words help or hurt?” Choose words that bring encouragement, truth and love.

Sometimes being a light means making a difficult choice. Your friends might encourage you to do something you know is wrong. But you don’t have to follow the crowd. You can choose what is right, even if you’re standing alone. God gives us courage to make good choices.

Your light can make a difference

You don’t have to change the whole world at once. You can start where you are: at your school, in your home, at your church, on the playground, online, or with your friends.

Every time you choose kindness instead of cruelty, forgiveness instead of anger, honesty instead of lying, and love instead of hate, you are letting your light shine. Jesus said in Matthew 5:16, “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.”

Encourage someone who is having a difficult day. Help someone without being asked. Say something kind instead of something hurtful. Stand up for what is right. Pray for someone who needs God’s help. These are things you can do to let your light shine, so others can see Jesus through your life.

Ask God to help you be a light wherever you go, to give you a kind heart and wise words, and to help you show His love to the people around you, so you can make a difference in someone’s life.
