Forgiveness
Why should we forgive?
The Bible gives several important reasons why believers should forgive. Forgiveness is not based on whether the other person deserves it, but on God’s love, mercy, and His command to His people.
The greatest reason to forgive is that God has forgiven our sins through Jesus Christ. The word of God says, “And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you.” (Ephesians 4:32) When we remember how much God has forgiven us, we are encouraged to extend that same grace to others.
As Jesus was dying on the cross, He prayed, “Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do.” (Luke 23:34) Jesus demonstrated that forgiveness is an act of love, even in the face of great injustice.
The Bible shows us that we should forgive because:
- God has forgiven us.
- Jesus commands us to forgive.
- Forgiveness reflects God’s character.
- It frees us from bitterness.
- It demonstrates love.
- It leaves justice in God’s hands.
- It brings peace, healing and spiritual freedom.
Forgiving others
Forgiveness is one of the most powerful acts a person can choose to do. It does not mean forgetting the hurt or pretending that wrong actions never happened. Instead, it means choosing to let go of resentment and the desire for revenge, allowing your heart and mind to heal.
The word of God shows forgiveness as one of the greatest expressions of God’s love and one of the defining characteristics of a follower of Christ. It is not simply an emotion but a deliberate choice to release resentment and extend mercy, just as God has shown mercy to us.
God is the ultimate example of forgiveness. The foundation of true forgiveness is God’s forgiveness of humanity through Jesus Christ. Because God forgives our sins, believers are called to forgive others. 1 John 1:9 says, “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
Jesus taught that forgiveness is not optional. He instructed His followers to forgive others repeatedly, regardless of how many times they have been wronged. In Matthew 18:21–22, Peter came to Jesus and asked, “Lord, how oft shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? till seven times?” Jesus answered, “I say not unto thee, Until seven times: but, Until seventy times seven.” This teaches that forgiveness should become a way of life rather than something offered only occasionally.
The word of God also teaches us that forgiveness is a gift from God and a command for His people. It reflects God’s character, brings peace to the heart, restores relationships, and points others to Christ. Forgiveness does not excuse wrongdoing or deny justice; rather, it entrusts justice to God while freeing the heart from bitterness.
