A Tiny Seed: Let God’s Word Grow In You
A tiny seed: let God’s word grow in you
Main scripture: Mark 4:3–20, the parable of the sower.
Have you ever planted a tiny seed and watched it grow into something much bigger? A seed may look small, but when it is planted in good soil, watered and cared for, it can grow into a strong and healthy plant.
God’s word is like that seed. When we hear God’s word, it is like a seed being planted in our hearts. What happens next depends on what we do with it. If we listen, believe, obey, and allow God’s word to guide us, it can grow inside us and change our lives.
God’s word is a seed
In Mark 4:14, Jesus explains that the sower sows the word. Every time you read the Bible, listen to a Bible lesson, hear a sermon, or learn about Jesus, God’s word is being planted in your heart. You may not see a change immediately, but that doesn’t mean nothing is happening. Just like a tiny seed takes time to grow, God’s word takes time to produce results in our lives.
Your heart is the soil
Jesus tells us about different kinds of soil in the parable of the sower. The soil represents our hearts. Sometimes we hear God’s word but don’t pay attention. Sometimes we are excited about it for a little while but give up when life becomes difficult. Other times, worries, distractions, and the things we want can become more important than God. But Jesus also talks about good soil. Good soil represents a heart that hears God’s word, accepts it, and allows it to produce fruit.
Ask yourself: “What kind of soil is my heart?”
Water the seed
A seed needs water, sunlight and care to grow. In the same way, our faith needs to be nurtured. We can help God’s word grow in us by:
- Reading the Bible
- Praying every day
- Obeying God’s instructions
- Listening when God teaches us
- Showing kindness to others
- Trusting God when life gets difficult
The more we spend time with God, the more His word can influence our thoughts, choices and actions.
Let your life produce fruit
When a seed grows, eventually it produces something that others can see. The same should happen in our lives. When God’s word grows in us, people should begin to see the fruit of the Spirit in us: love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control (Galatians 5:22–23). We shouldn’t just hear God’s word; we should live it as well.
Remember
You might be young, or you might think you are too small to make a difference. But great things can grow from something as small as a tiny seed. A small act of kindness can brighten someone’s day. A simple prayer can strengthen your faith, and one Bible verse planted deeply in your heart can help guide you for the rest of your life.
Don’t underestimate what God can grow in you. Let God’s word be the seed, let your heart be the good soil, and let God grow something beautiful in your life.
